(AP) - A former football player for Florida State and three NFL teams faces assault-related charges in connection with an incident involving his girlfriend.Deon Humphrey was taken into custody Thursday and charged with domestic battery by strangulation. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office says deputies who arrived at the linebacker's Wellington home found redness on his girlfriend's neck and bleeding from her ear consistent with being grabbed by the neck.

(AP) - Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks was hired as an appeals officer Friday by the NFL and the players' union.The former Tampa Bay star, who will be inducted into the hall on Aug. 2, replaces Matt Birk, now the NFL's director of football development. Brooks will hear player appeals of on-field discipline.

(AP) - Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey and running back Knowshon Moreno are starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list.The moves were expected as camp began Friday. Pouncey is expected to miss at least a couple of games and perhaps more while he recovers from hip surgery in June. Moreno is expected to join practice sometime during camp after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in June. The former Broncos running back signed a one-year, $3.275 million free agent contract in March.

(AP) - A judge has rejected a motion to dismiss charges against Aaron Hernandez stemming from the 2013 slaying of a Boston man whose body was found near Hernandez's home.Lawyers for Hernandez, a former New England Patriots tight end, argued that prosecutors hadn't shown probable cause to sustain the murder charge against Hernandez in the death of Odin Lloyd and hadn't presented any evidence or motive for the slaying.
